The March After Fire
Lomas de Santiago, 2008

By Thea Gavin

The March after fire
whole hillsides blaze orange again—
poppy pyrotechnics.

Spring heat and green brings
ticks itching for a ride
or place to settle down.

Lupine reunion—
bristly pink matriarch and
bi-color cousins.

Trail of sunbaked clay—
cuneiform commentary
that translates: cougar.

Gaunt laurel sumac
re-sprouts a burgundy skirt,
sheds her charred past.
